We will begin 2013 in South America as we leave our ship in Manaus, Brazil. The next 10 weeks will be spent traveling through this continent, with stops in Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. While in the Amazon region of Brazil we will spend a week visiting the Reserva Xixuaú-Xipariná, which is about 90 miles (150 kilometers) up river from Manaus. We plan to trek and see many animals while we are there.
After visiting Brazil’s capital city of Brasilia, we will begin our overland journey, stopping in Punta del Este, Uruguay and the historic cities of Cordoba and Mendoza, Argentina. We will travel through the beautiful lake district of Argentina as we continue south.
Our other two South American treks will be in the Patagonia region. In Argentina we will hike in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. After crossing the border to Chile we will trek in Torres del Paine National Park. A ferry through the Chilean fjords will bring us towards the capital city of Santiago and the beginning of our final sea voyage back to the U.S. At the beginning of our time at sea we will visit Peru and Ecuador before moving on to Central America.

Quito, Ecuador is a jewel. It was the treasury of the Incas and was considered the “Florence of the Andes” with it’s beautiful churches. At 9350 ft. altitude, Quito is too high for mosquitoes. It has a Springtime climate. At rare times, nine snowcapped volcanoes show up surrounding the city. Often 19,000 ft. snowcapped Cotopaxi volcano appears from its cloud cover. Hopefully, you will see it. Forty years ago, we spent two years in Quito with the view of Cotopaxi looming out of our living room window.
